“Remember, Armond,” Counselor Lance Overmyer said in the booming tones he invariably used in court as he loomed over his cousin, whose height he topped by at least three inches. Under a considerable obligation to his kinsman and having nothing of importance demanding prior attention, he had hurried to the DPS Building after hearing the message on his telephone answering machine. They were standing in one of the interrogation rooms designed to offer privacy while also allowing witnesses to see that there were no abuses by either of the opposing parties. “Let me do the talking, or, if you have to speak, stick to it being too dark for you to see anything, and nothing more. That way, they won’t be able to hold you. Or, if they try, I’ll have you out on a writ. It will take a mite longer, but you’ll still walk.”

The door of the room opened to admit Sheriff Tragg and Lieutenant Harvey before the undertaker could make any response. However, he felt relief at knowing he had the considerable legal expertise of his cousin instantly available.

“My client wishes it to be placed on record that he is unable to render assistance in your inquiries, as it was too dark for him to see anything that happened in the parking lot,” the lawyer stated after a perfunctory exchange of courtesies.

“Therefore, as he has an urgent reason for going to Austin, I request his immediate release.” “Is that what you want, Mr. Dubois?” Jack inquired.

“Y-yes!” the undertaker replied, the word popping out like a cork leaving a bottle. Then, forgetting the advice from his cousin, he felt he should elaborate and went on, “You see, there wasn’t any lights on …”

“On where, Mr. Dubois?” Harvey asked as the explanation died away uncompleted. “You don’t have to answer that!” Overmyer snapped. “Well, Sheriff, as there is nothing further my client can add, will you authorize his release?”

“No!” Jack answered bluntly. “We aren’t satisfied with what we’ve heard, and we’ll be continuing to hold him as a material witness until we are.”

“Then I’ll be obliged to obtain a writ for his release!” the lawyer threatened in his most menacing fashion. “Then you’d best go do it, Counselor,” the sheriff advised without offering any suggestion of being worried in the slightest by the proposition. “Because, until one is delivered, or he’s been more cooperative, Mr. Dubois is staying in our custody.”
